Alberta is Evolving
The booming economy of Alberta together with the high paying jobs has attracted an army of young men from ages 20 to 40 from all over Canada. The young men are stereotypically the least stable and carry the highest incident ratio of addictions to marijuana, cocaine, crack, painkillers, heroin, crystal meth, ecstasy and of course alcohol.
The drug rehabilitation centers are overloaded with addicts that some residential rehabs have resorted to offering short-term 21-day programs. The long waiting lists for government sponsored drug rehabilitation has increased exponentially, leading too many having to wait long times just to reach a counselor.
As such, many programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous and the Salvation Army programs have to tackle the onslaught of drug addicts streaming to Alberta.
Alberta’s Drug Rehab
Although Alberta is becoming one of the richest provinces, it is also becoming famous for the poor Alcohol treatment services in Alberta offered and for addict treatment all together. It is only worse in the provinces in the east of Atlantic Canada. Due to the wealth, it also attracts gangs and drug-dealers who want to make a fast buck. Cocaine, crack, heroine, painkillers etc. have become very easy to get due to the increasing amount of drug dealers and gangs entering and expanding into Alberta.
Due to the increase of hard drugs being brought into the province, the requirement for more long-term patient treatments is increasing, but the Alberta Government has gotten rid of most government sponsored programs. The cheapest programs would cost at least 15 dollars a day, which is $315 if you are undergoing a quick 21 day program, and the effectiveness of such a short program is questionable.
The AADAC, the Alberta Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission, offers programs that go longer than 21 days. There is a 50 day program available exclusively to oil field workers only or those who have health benefits thanks to their employers, due to the costs being exorbitantly high.
The addictions to prescription drugs are also increasing
Alberta’s Alcohol Rehab
The most abused drug in Alberta is without a doubt, alcohol. The privatization of the liquor distribution has increased this even more, due to the fact that now every corner store can now sell liquor. This makes harder types of alcohol more available at many other areas, even to juveniles.
Since the hard drug problem of addicts to cocaine and meth, the treatment is often very similar, when an alcoholic is treated. The extreme alcoholics and homeless alcoholics are aided solely by good will organizations such as Alcoholics Anonymous or the Salvation Army. What an alcoholic really needs is someone who will personally tend to his physical and psychological problems, a person specialized in alcohol drug treatment and can prescribe the right medication and give a correct therapy for their addiction. However, due to the hard drug problem and cutbacks on government sponsors it is becoming more difficult.
Intervention Service
There is also the method of intervention. This is for people who are close to the addict who decide to actively take part in stopping the degeneration process of an addict. The intervention is usually done with someone who controls the intervention and the people close to the addict then discuss with the person who is addicted how their addiction makes them feel and what they feel should be done. Once all the people have spoken their opinions the person who is addicted can decide how to further go on about the situation.
An intervention has become more popular to help make sure people get away from their drug habits, due to the fact that the personal identification of the addict with those who he is injuring with his behavior becomes more evident. That and the fact that a lot of television series’ show successful attempts of interventions it is also attempted amongst the population as well.
